Calling All Cantabrigian Poets
This Wednesday, the submissions page for 2022’s Cambridge Sidewalk Poetry Contest reopens. Citizens of all ages are invited to submit one poem by March 14th for the chance to be one of the lucky 5 immortalized in sidewalk concrete. Interested to see the work of past winners? We could drop a link right here but that’d be a little too easy. Instead, check out this map for your own winners walking tour of Cambridge during the (gasp) 40 deg highs and sun we’re tentatively promised this week.
Another GLX Update, Baby
Maybe it’s our well-developed muscles of cynicism, but this video posted by developer Discover USQ just doesn’t seem real. It seems to depict a new Green Line train zipping along from the new Lechmere MBTA station in Cambridge to the new Union Square MBTA station in Somerville, but surely that can’t be. The Globe seems nearly as incredulous, with photographic evidence and the word of MBTA general manager, Steve Poftak, to suggest the Union Square line will open in, dare we say, March. The Green Line Extension has been “almost here” in fits and starts since 1990 and was almost left for dead, again, as recently as 2015. Reborn in 2017, and with shockingly few hiccups through the beginning of the pandemic, the extension finally seemed back on schedule—with the odd delay here and there—before this announcement. The longer Medford line is slated to begin operations in the summer. We’re trying to believe our own eyes, but it’ll be a lot easier when we can actually ride the thing, one day, maybe, hopefully, soon.
