LIVE POULTRY FRESH KILLED

LIVE POULTRY FRESH KILLED
If you’ve ever strolled around East Cambridge, there’s probably a specific sign that’s caught your eye. The giant yellow silhouette of a chicken stands defiant against words reading “LIVE POULTRY Fresh KILLED” and lights up Cambridge Street in a way no neon can. But after 75 years and rising property values, the sign will be coming down. Mayflower Poultry Company will survive and move to the Boston Meat Market off of 93 while the building will remain a protected historical sight so that the city of Cambridge will have to approve whatever the developer proposes for the old property. The beloved sign, along with its trademark (find her merch here), will go to auction with 10% of the proceeds and 20% of the auctioneer’s commission going to local non-profit, Food for Free. The auction will be held both online and on site this Thursday at 1 p.m. with auctioneer Paul Saperstein fielding bids from a ladder just below the sign. Stop by to make a bid or just to pay your respects to the landmark hen in her final days.
A New Champion
She did it! Last Friday, Maya Jonas-Silver announced via Twitter her victory with a picture of her watch displaying 7:04:29. Jonas-Silver now holds the record for fastest time to travel to all MBTA subway stations - smashing the previous record by 25 minutes. And she didn’t even get off at Park Street!
